**If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, you probably shouldn't switch suites to get a better AI visibility module.** The switching cost dwarfs the difference. But if you're choosing a suite fresh, or genuinely weighing both, the AI modules differ in ways worth knowing.

Disclosure: we build Kitbase, a dedicated AI visibility tool, mentioned once at the end.

## The short version

**Brand Radar** covers more engines, including Copilot, and adds Reddit, YouTube and TikTok mention tracking. It sits next to the largest backlink index in the industry.

**The Semrush AI Toolkit** brings a large prompt database and connects to Semrush's broader content and advertising tooling.

## Engine coverage

Brand Radar covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity.

The Semrush AI Toolkit covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI surfaces.

Neither covers Claude as of writing, which is a real gap if your buyers are technical, since Claude usage skews that way. Both change coverage frequently, so confirm on the vendor's site.

**Brand Radar wins**, mainly on Copilot.

## The data behind the module

This is where the suites differ most, and it reflects what each company is good at.

Semrush brings a very large prompt and keyword database, which helps with the hardest question in GEO: which prompts to track. If your prompt list comes from guesswork, that data narrows it considerably.

Ahrefs brings the largest backlink index available, and pairs Brand Radar with search-demand data plus mention tracking across Reddit, YouTube and TikTok. Those three surfaces show up heavily in AI citations, so tracking your presence on them is more relevant than it first appears. We covered why in [the Reddit effect on AI recommendations](/blog/reddit-effect-ai-recommendations).

**A genuine split.** Semrush wins on prompt demand; Ahrefs wins on the sources that feed citations.

## Why the pairing matters

Both companies argue AI visibility is more useful next to their existing data, and both arguments hold up differently.

Ahrefs' case: AI engines ground answers in retrieved pages, and which pages get retrieved correlates with the authority signals its link index measures. If a competitor is being cited more, checking whether the citing pages have stronger link profiles is a reasonable next step, and Brand Radar puts that one click away.

Semrush's case: AI visibility work is content work, and Semrush's content tooling, keyword data and site audit are where you'd do it. Finding a gap and briefing a page in the same tool is a shorter loop.

Both are true. Which matters depends on whether your GEO bottleneck is authority or content.

## Pricing

Both are add-ons on top of an already substantial subscription. Semrush's is typically priced per domain, which erodes quickly across several properties. Ahrefs' is an add-on to your existing plan.

Published third-party figures for both vary, so confirm directly. Neither is cheap in absolute terms; both are cheap relative to a dedicated platform if you're already paying for the suite.

**Roughly even**, with Semrush's per-domain model worse for multi-property teams.

## Side by side

| | Ahrefs Brand Radar | Semrush AI Toolkit |
|---|---|---|
| Engines | 6, incl. Copilot | 4–5 |
| Claude | No | No |
| Prompt / demand database | Search demand | Very large prompt database |
| Reddit, YouTube, TikTok mentions | Yes | No |
| Paired with | Largest backlink index | Content, keyword and ad tooling |
| AI crawler detection | No | No |
| Pricing | Add-on | Add-on, typically per domain |

## Which to choose

If you already pay for one, use its module. The difference between them is not worth a suite migration, retraining a team and losing historical data.

If you're choosing a suite fresh and AI visibility is a meaningful factor, Brand Radar's broader engine coverage and third-party mention tracking make it the stronger AI module, while Semrush is the better overall suite if you run paid advertising or produce content at volume.

The shared limitation matters more than the difference between them: neither reports AI crawler activity. Their site audits crawl your site with their own bots, which is a different job from telling you whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended fetched a page. Those crawlers don't run JavaScript, so no tag sees them either. When your AI visibility moves and you want to know why, that's the missing input in both.

Kitbase covers that gap and reaches ten answer surfaces including Claude, without any of the SEO tooling either suite provides. Covered in [Kitbase vs Ahrefs Brand Radar](/blog/kitbase-vs-ahrefs-brand-radar) and [Kitbase vs Semrush AI Toolkit](/blog/kitbase-vs-semrush-ai-toolkit).

## FAQ

**Which module covers more AI engines?**
Brand Radar, with six including Copilot. Semrush covers four to five.

**Does either track Claude?**
Not as of writing. Confirm directly, since coverage changes frequently.

**Which is cheaper?**
Both are add-ons with varying published figures. Semrush's per-domain model costs more across multiple properties.

**Should I switch suites for a better AI module?**
Almost never. The switching cost outweighs the difference.

**Do either track AI crawlers?**
No. Neither reports which AI crawlers fetched your pages.
