**Geoptie offers a free GEO audit, which is a good way to start and a bad way to continue.** An audit is a snapshot of a moving target, and the alternatives worth considering are the ones that turn snapshots into a series.

We build Kitbase, which offers a free AEO report and sells subscriptions.

## Other free audits and checkers

### Hall

The strongest free tier here, and it stores history rather than producing a one-time report. Around eight surfaces, conversation context behind each citation, and server-side agent analytics for AI crawlers. **Best for** free tracking that accumulates.

### LLMrefs

Free checks across up to eleven models with keyword-derived prompts. **Best for** breadth on zero budget.

### Knowatoa

One-click scan across AI models, flagging business-critical gaps where you're missing or misrepresented. Faster to a specific finding than most audits. **Best for** producing a concrete example for an internal conversation.

### Kitbase's free AEO report

We publish a [free AEO report](https://kitbase.dev/free-aeo-report) for your domain, which is the same category of thing: useful for a first look, not a substitute for tracking.

## Ongoing tracking, cheaply

### Rankscale

Lowest serious paid price, credit-based, multi-engine, with AEO audits attached. The natural first paid step from a free audit. **Best for** budget-constrained teams.

### Otterly.AI

Broad base coverage plus a GEO content audit for crawlability and citation potential, at entry-level pricing. **Best for** small teams wanting audit-style guidance continuously.

### Waikay

Very low entry pricing, flagging hallucinations and knowledge gaps as well as presence. **Best for** accuracy problems.

### ZipTie

Focused on Google AI Overviews plus ChatGPT and Perplexity, with strong reporting for the price. **Best for** categories that live in AI Overviews.

## Tracking with diagnosis

### Kitbase

Kitbase covers up to ten surfaces on a schedule, reporting presence rate with brand mentions and domain citations counted separately, share of voice normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank over time, cited domains and exact pages classified as yours, a competitor's or third-party and tagged by source type, and per-mention sentiment, recommendation status and list position.

The part an audit fundamentally cannot give you: server-side [AI crawler detection](https://docs.kitbase.dev/crawler-detection). Requests forwarded from your server or edge, resolved to a named crawler and vendor and verified against published identity, with per-path crawl frequency. An audit can tell you a page looks crawlable. Only crawler data tells you whether anything crawled it.

Alongside: cookieless web analytics with funnels, journeys and retention on the same pipeline, backlink opportunities built from the domains AI cites where you're absent, a link marketplace, a site audit and keyword research.

**The honest limitation:** no free tier beyond the one-off report, and Starter tracks ChatGPT only at $99 a month. **Best for** teams past the audit stage.

### Peec AI and Profound

The mid-market and enterprise steps up: Peec for demand-weighted prompt discovery and multi-country tracking, Profound for the widest engine coverage plus real prompt-volume data. **Best for** teams with a dedicated GEO owner.

## What a GEO audit can and can't tell you

Audits check structural things: whether your pages are crawlable, whether the markup is clean, whether content is organised in ways that make extraction easy, whether your robots rules block AI crawlers you meant to allow. All of that is worth knowing and mostly static, so a one-time check is appropriate.

What an audit can't tell you is anything about outcomes. Whether the engines actually fetched your pages. Whether you're cited. Whether that's improving. Whether a competitor overtook you. Those change constantly and need repeated measurement.

The trap is treating an audit score as a visibility measure. A perfectly structured site that no AI crawler has visited in two months will score well and be invisible. Check the [robots.txt rules for AI crawlers](/blog/robots-txt-ai-crawlers) as part of an audit, then move to measurement, because the audit's job finishes quickly.

## FAQ

**Is a free GEO audit useful?**
Yes, once, for structural problems. It can't measure visibility, which changes constantly.

**What is the best free alternative for ongoing tracking?**
Hall, whose free tier stores history and covers crawlers.

**Which alternatives track AI crawlers?**
Hall, Kitbase, Profound and Scrunch AI. Kitbase verifies crawler identity against published ranges.

**How often should AI visibility be measured?**
Frequently enough that a single unusual run doesn't move your trend. Daily on a focused prompt set is a reasonable default.

**Can an audit tell me why I'm not cited?**
It can rule out structural causes. It can't tell you whether the engines read your pages or whose pages they cite instead.
