title: "Kitbase vs Ahrefs Brand Radar: AI Data Beside Backlinks vs Beside Crawlers | Kitbase Blog"
description: "Kitbase vs Ahrefs Brand Radar compared on engine coverage, citation detail, AI crawler tracking and what each pairs AI visibility data with."

**Both tools argue that AI visibility data is more useful next to something else. Ahrefs pairs it with the best backlink index in the industry. Kitbase pairs it with AI crawler logs and conversion data.** Which pairing helps depends on what you think moves AI citations.

We build Kitbase.

## Ahrefs' argument

Brand Radar covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity, with brand mentions, competitive benchmarking, AI citations and search-demand data from a large prompt database, plus YouTube, TikTok and Reddit mentions. It sits inside Ahrefs next to Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer.

The pairing logic is strong and worth taking seriously. AI engines ground answers in retrieved pages, and which pages get retrieved correlates with the same authority signals that drive search rankings. If a competitor is being cited more, one plausible reason is that the pages citing them have better link profiles, and Ahrefs is the tool that can show you that in the same session.

The Reddit and YouTube mention tracking is also more relevant than it first appears. Both surfaces show up heavily in AI citations, and we've written about why in [the Reddit effect on AI recommendations](/blog/reddit-effect-ai-recommendations).

Brand Radar is an add-on priced on top of an Ahrefs subscription.

## Kitbase's argument

The competing view is that the binding constraint is usually retrieval, not authority.

Before an engine can cite your page, something has to fetch it. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and OAI-SearchBot don't execute JavaScript, so nothing in your analytics or in Ahrefs tells you whether they did. Kitbase reads requests forwarded from your server or edge, resolves each to a named crawler and vendor, verifies the claim against that crawler's published identity, and reports per-path crawl frequency. A section that stopped being crawled explains a citation drop that no backlink data would.

The answer-layer reporting is also more granular: presence rate splits brand mentions from domain citations, share of voice is normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank, cited sources go to the exact page classified by ownership and source type, and each mention carries sentiment, recommendation status and list position. Coverage reaches ten surfaces on Business, including Claude, DeepSeek, GLM and Kimi.

And the pairing continues past the citation: cookieless web analytics on the same events pipeline with funnels, journeys, retention and rage-click detection, so an AI referral is traceable to a signup.

**The honest limitation:** Kitbase licenses its backlink data from DataForSEO rather than crawling for it, and supplements it with links detected from your real traffic, reclamation opportunities and a competitor gap list built from the domains AI cites. That's enough to run outreach from, and it isn't a crawl Kitbase owns. For link research at Ahrefs' scale, Ahrefs is the tool.

## Which pairing you need

Ask what your last unexplained citation change looked like.

If competitors keep appearing in answers you used to own, and the pages the engines cite have obviously stronger link profiles than yours, Ahrefs gives you the diagnosis and the tooling to act on it. That's a real workflow and Brand Radar makes it one session instead of three.

If your own pages seem fine and you can't tell whether the engines have even read them recently, amount of link data helps. That's a retrieval question, and crawler data is the only source.

Running both is common and defensible: Ahrefs for authority and link work, a GEO tool for the answer and crawl layers. If you already pay for Ahrefs, turn Brand Radar on first and see whether it closes your questions before adding anything.

## FAQ

**Does Ahrefs track AI crawlers like GPTBot?**
Not as of writing. Ahrefs crawls the web with its own bot; that's different from reporting which AI crawlers fetched your pages. Kitbase, Hall, Scrunch AI and Profound do the latter.

**Does Kitbase have a backlink index?**
No. It detects backlinks from real traffic, flags reclamation opportunities and builds a competitor gap list from the domains AI cites for your category. Ahrefs' index is far larger.

**Which covers more AI engines?**
Kitbase on Business, at ten surfaces. Ahrefs covers six including Copilot, which Kitbase doesn't track.

**How much does Brand Radar cost?**
It's an add-on to an Ahrefs subscription. Published figures vary, so confirm with Ahrefs.

**Do backlinks affect AI citations?**
They correlate with which pages get retrieved, so they matter indirectly. Retrieval and freshness matter too, which is why crawl data is worth having alongside.
