**Knowatoa answers "what do AI models say about us right now" in one click. Kitbase answers "is that changing, why, and does it make us any money" over months.** Those are different products for different moments, and the honest advice is to do the first before paying for the second.

We build Kitbase.

## What Knowatoa is for

Knowatoa runs a one-click scan across AI models to see whether and how they answer the questions that drive your sales funnel, and flags business-critical gaps: places where a model doesn't know you, gets you wrong, or recommends someone else.

The value is speed. You can go from nothing to a concrete list of problems in an afternoon, without configuring prompts, brands, aliases and competitors first. For a first conversation with a sceptical executive, that's often more persuasive than a dashboard, because it produces specific, quotable failures rather than a percentage.

The limit is that a scan is a snapshot. Run it again next week and some of those gaps will have closed and new ones opened, without anything having changed on anyone's site.

## Why snapshots mislead

AI answers are non-deterministic. The same prompt to the same model returns different brand lists on different runs, because the model samples from a distribution and the retrieval underneath it changes as the web changes.

So a scan showing you absent from four models is compatible with two very different realities: you're genuinely invisible, or you're present 40% of the time and this run caught the other 60%. A single scan can't tell them apart, which means it can't tell you whether last month's work helped.

Getting past that needs repeated sampling and stored history, and that costs money because every prompt sent to every engine is a paid API call.

## What Kitbase does with that

**Scheduled runs, built to survive interruption.** A run is a batch of prompt × engine queries. Completed provider calls are recorded and never re-executed, so a restart or a deploy mid-run resumes rather than re-paying for finished queries. Runs pause and cancel cleanly, keeping whatever finished.

**Measures that separate different problems.** Presence rate splits brand mentions from actual domain citations. Share of voice is normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank over time. Cited sources go down to the exact page, classified as yours, a competitor's or third-party and tagged by source type. Every mention carries sentiment, whether you were recommended or merely named, and your position in ranked lists. Competitors the engines mention that you don't track get surfaced automatically, with history backfilled.

**The layers underneath.** Server-side [AI crawler detection](https://docs.kitbase.dev/crawler-detection) with identity verification and per-path crawl frequency, so you know whether the models can read the pages you fixed. Cookieless web analytics on the same pipeline with funnels, journeys and retention. Backlink opportunities from the domains AI cites where you're absent, a link marketplace, a site audit and keyword research.

**The honest limitation:** Kitbase takes longer to set up. You register brands with the aliases and domains engines actually use, add competitors, write prompts. Knowatoa gets you a result faster, and for a one-off question that's the better trade.

## Use both, in order

Run a scan first. If it shows the models already recommend you consistently across your funnel questions, you may not need a measurement programme at all, and that's a useful thing to learn for the price of an afternoon.

If it shows gaps, the next questions are whether they're stable or noise, whether the cause is crawling or citation, and whether closing them moves anything commercially. Those need repeated sampling and data outside the answer layer.

If you'd rather test that thesis for free first, Hall's free tier stores history and covers crawlers, which is the cheapest way to see whether a gap persists across runs.

## FAQ

**What does Knowatoa do?**
It runs a one-click scan across AI models to check whether they answer your funnel-driving questions correctly, and flags gaps where you're missing or misrepresented.

**Why isn't a single scan enough?**
Because AI answers vary between identical runs. One scan can't distinguish genuine absence from [normal sampling variance](/blog/ai-answers-non-determinism), so it can't measure progress.

**Does Knowatoa track AI crawlers?**
Not as of writing. Kitbase, Hall, Scrunch AI and Profound report crawler activity.

**How long does Kitbase take to set up?**
You register your brand with its aliases and domains, add competitors, and add prompts. After that runs execute on a schedule.

**Can I do a free scan before buying anything?**
Yes. Several tools offer free audits, and Kitbase publishes a [free AEO report](https://kitbase.dev/free-aeo-report) for your domain.
