**If you already pay for Semrush, its AI Toolkit is the cheapest AI visibility you'll ever buy, because the marginal cost is an add-on rather than a new vendor.** Kitbase costs more and goes deeper, particularly on the parts of the AI funnel that don't look like SEO. The question is whether "good enough, already in the tool" beats "better, one more login."

We build Kitbase. For a lot of Semrush shops, the answer is genuinely Semrush.

## The case for staying in Semrush

**It's already approved.** No procurement, no new contract, no training. For a team of three that matters more than a feature comparison.

**AI data next to search data.** The AI Toolkit tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI surfaces, produces a visibility score with competitor benchmarking, and adds brand-perception signals, all sitting beside your keyword rankings, backlinks and content tooling. When AI visibility and organic rankings move together, seeing both in one place is a real advantage over correlating exports.

**A large prompt database.** Semrush brings substantial search-demand data to the problem, which helps with the hardest part of GEO: deciding which prompts are worth tracking.

**Existing workflows.** Position tracking, site audit, content templates. If the work you'd do after a GEO finding is SEO work anyway, doing it in the same tool is efficient.

## Where a suite add-on runs out

Three limits show up consistently, and none of them are Semrush doing a bad job. They're consequences of AI visibility being a module rather than the product.

**No AI crawler visibility.** This is the biggest one. Semrush's site audit crawls your site with its own bot; it doesn't tell you whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended or PerplexityBot fetched your pages. Those crawlers don't run JavaScript, so no tag sees them either. When your AI visibility drops, the first question is whether the engines are still reading the relevant pages, and a suite module can't answer it.

**Shallower AI-specific metrics.** A visibility score is a blended number. Whether you were *mentioned* or actually *cited*, whether you were *recommended* or merely named, your *position* in a ranked answer, and which exact third-party pages the engine leaned on are separate facts that need separate fixes, and dedicated tools report them separately.

**Add-on pricing per domain.** The AI Toolkit is priced on top of your Semrush subscription, often per domain, which erodes the "it's basically free" logic once you have several properties.

## What Kitbase does with that budget

Up to ten answer surfaces, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, tiered by plan. Presence rate with mentions and citations counted separately. Share of voice normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank over time. Cited domains and exact pages classified as yours, a competitor's or third-party and tagged by source type. Per-mention sentiment, recommendation status and list position. Competitors the engines named that you don't track, surfaced automatically with backfilled history.

Plus server-side [AI crawler detection](https://docs.kitbase.dev/crawler-detection) with identity verification and per-path crawl frequency, cookieless web analytics with funnels and retention on the same pipeline, backlink opportunities built from the domains AI cites where you're absent, a link marketplace, a site audit and keyword research.

**The honest limitation:** Kitbase is not an SEO suite. No rank tracking, no keyword difficulty database at Semrush's scale, no advertising research, no content templates. If you left Semrush for Kitbase you'd lose most of your SEO workflow.

## The realistic answer

Most teams shouldn't replace Semrush. They should decide whether AI visibility deserves a dedicated tool alongside it.

The trigger is usually one of two things. You need to know whether AI crawlers are reading your pages, which no suite module reports. Or the blended score stopped being actionable, and you need to separate "cited" from "mentioned" and see which third-party pages are carrying your category.

If neither has happened yet, run the AI Toolkit and spend the difference elsewhere. Running both is common and not wasteful: Semrush for search, a GEO tool for the answer layer and the crawl layer. Our [AEO vs GEO vs SEO](/blog/aeo-vs-geo-vs-seo) post covers why the disciplines overlap without being the same job.

## FAQ

**Is the Semrush AI Toolkit good enough for AI visibility?**
For a baseline, yes. It tracks the main engines and benchmarks competitors. It doesn't cover AI crawlers or report citation-level detail.

**Does Semrush track AI crawlers like GPTBot?**
No. Its site audit uses its own crawler. Kitbase, Hall, Scrunch AI and Profound report AI crawler activity from your server or edge.

**Can Kitbase replace Semrush?**
No. It has keyword research and a site audit but isn't an SEO suite. Most teams run both.

**How much does the AI Toolkit cost?**
It's an add-on to a Semrush subscription, typically priced per domain. Confirm current pricing with Semrush, since published figures vary.

**Which tracks more AI engines?**
Kitbase on its Business plan, reaching ten surfaces including Claude, DeepSeek, GLM and Kimi. Semrush covers the four main ones.
