**Microsoft Clarity gives away session replay, heatmaps and rage-click detection, which makes it the most generous free tool in its category by a wide margin.** Alternatives have to justify charging for something Clarity provides at no cost, and a few genuinely can.

We build Kitbase, which takes a different approach to the same questions.

## Paid replay and heatmap tools

### Hotjar

The long-standing leader, with replay, heatmaps, surveys and feedback widgets in one product. The survey and feedback tooling is the main thing Clarity doesn't match. **Best for** teams who want qualitative feedback alongside recordings.

### FullStory

Enterprise-grade, with retroactive event capture and strong search across sessions, so you can find the specific behaviour you're investigating rather than watching recordings hoping to spot it. **Best for** larger teams doing serious UX research.

### LogRocket

Replay plus front-end error and performance monitoring, which makes it as much an engineering tool as a UX one. **Best for** teams debugging front-end issues.

### Contentsquare

Enterprise experience analytics with deep zone-based analysis. **Best for** large ecommerce.

### Smartlook and Mouseflow

Mid-market replay and heatmap tools. **Best for** teams wanting more than Clarity without enterprise pricing.

## Privacy considerations

Clarity is free because it serves Microsoft's interests, and session replay is inherently data-heavy: you're recording what users do on your pages, which means masking rules, consent handling and a data processing agreement matter more than with pageview analytics.

If that's a concern, two directions:

**Self-hosted replay.** Matomo offers session recording and heatmaps as add-ons on infrastructure you control. **Best for** teams with data residency requirements.

**Skip replay entirely.** Which is the option most teams don't consider.

## Getting the answers without recording

### Kitbase

Kitbase doesn't record sessions. It detects rage clicks and dead clicks as first-class signals, surfaced directly rather than found by watching recordings, alongside page durations and journeys.

The argument for that trade: most teams use replay to answer a small number of recurring questions. Where are people getting stuck, which element isn't working, which page frustrates them. Frustration signals answer those directly, without the storage cost, the consent complexity, or the hours spent watching sessions to find the one that matters.

What you lose is the ability to see exactly what happened in a specific session, which is genuinely useful for reproducing a weird bug or understanding an unusual path. If that's core to how your team works, keep a replay tool.

Around that, Kitbase provides cookieless web analytics with autocapture, custom events, funnels, journeys, retention and realtime, on a server-side anonymous ID, plus server-side [AI crawler detection](https://docs.kitbase.dev/crawler-detection) with identity verification and [AI visibility](https://docs.kitbase.dev/ai-visibility) across up to ten answer surfaces.

**The honest limitation:** no replay, and no click or scroll heatmap. There's an activity heatmap showing traffic by day of week against hour of day, which answers scheduling questions rather than layout ones. Clarity gives you replay and click heatmaps for free. **Best for** teams who want the frustration answers without the recording overhead.

## What replay is actually used for

Worth auditing before paying for it, or before assuming you need it.

In most teams, replay gets used heavily for two weeks after installation and then occasionally, for three things: investigating a specific reported bug, checking whether a new page works as intended, and settling an argument about user behaviour.

The first is a genuinely good use and hard to replace. The second is usually better answered by a funnel. The third is often better answered by data than by cherry-picked recordings, since anyone can find a session supporting their position.

Rage and dead click detection covers a lot of the middle ground: it tells you where people are struggling and on which elements, without anyone watching anything. We wrote about what those signals catch in [rage clicks and frustration signals](/blog/rage-clicks-frustration-signals).

If after that audit replay is still load-bearing, Clarity is free and there's no reason to pay for an alternative unless you need surveys, searchable sessions or self-hosting.

## FAQ

**Is Microsoft Clarity really free?**
Yes, with no volume caps published for the core product. Consider what that implies for data usage and review the terms.

**What is the best paid Clarity alternative?**
Hotjar for surveys and feedback, FullStory for searchable sessions at enterprise scale, LogRocket for front-end debugging.

**Can I get frustration data without session replay?**
Yes. Rage and dead click detection surfaces where users struggle without recording sessions. Kitbase does this natively.

**Is session replay a privacy risk?**
It records user interactions, so masking rules, consent handling and processing agreements matter more than with pageview analytics.

**Does Clarity track AI crawlers?**
No. It's a JavaScript tool and AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript.
