**Similarweb estimates traffic and audience for sites you don't own, and its AI product extends that to category-level AI visibility.** Alternatives split into other estimation tools and first-party analytics, and which you need depends on whether your question is about competitors or about yourself.

We build Kitbase, which is in the second group.

## Other estimation tools

### Semrush

Traffic analytics alongside a full SEO suite, with an AI Toolkit for visibility tracking. Estimates are generally considered less granular than Similarweb's for traffic but come bundled with keyword and backlink data you'd otherwise buy separately. **Best for** teams who want competitive estimates plus SEO tooling.

### Ahrefs

Organic traffic estimates derived from its keyword and ranking index rather than panel data, plus Brand Radar for AI visibility. The methodology differs from Similarweb's, which means the numbers differ too. **Best for** search-focused competitive analysis.

### SpyFu and Sistrix

Narrower, cheaper competitive intelligence focused on search visibility. Less audience and channel data than Similarweb. **Best for** search-only competitive work on a budget.

### Profound

Not a traffic estimator, but the only tool with real prompt-volume data drawn from actual AI conversations. If your interest in Similarweb is understanding demand in the AI channel rather than competitor traffic, this is closer to the actual question. **Best for** understanding what people ask AI in your category.

## First-party measurement

The alternative most teams should consider, because a large share of Similarweb use is teams estimating things about themselves that they could measure.

### Kitbase

Kitbase measures your own property exactly rather than modelling it.

**AI visibility**, from real answers the engines returned for prompts you chose: up to ten surfaces, presence rate splitting mentions from citations, share of voice with a dense rank across every tracked brand, cited domains and exact pages classified by ownership and source type, and per-mention sentiment, recommendation status and list position.

**AI crawler traffic**, via server-side [detection](https://docs.kitbase.dev/crawler-detection) of requests forwarded from your server or edge, each resolved to a named crawler and verified against published identity, with per-path crawl frequency. No estimation tool can see this, because it happens on your infrastructure.

**Human traffic**, through cookieless web analytics with autocapture, custom events, funnels, journeys, retention, page durations and rage-click detection.

**The honest limitation:** zero competitor traffic data. Kitbase measures competitor presence in AI answers and nothing about their audience or channel mix. If competitive estimates are why you pay Similarweb, this doesn't replace it. **Best for** measuring your own AI channel precisely.

### Plausible, Fathom and Matomo

Privacy-first web analytics for first-party traffic measurement. None cover AI crawlers or AI visibility, but they're the cheap answer if your only need is accurate numbers for your own site. **Best for** simple first-party traffic measurement.

### Cloudflare's analytics

If your traffic already passes through Cloudflare, its analytics and bot reporting give you a view of crawler activity at the edge with no additional integration. Less detail on AI-specific crawler attribution than a dedicated tool. **Best for** teams already on Cloudflare.

Enterprise and estimation tools quote rather than publish pricing. Confirm directly.

## The question that decides it

Whose data do you need?

**Someone else's.** Market share, competitor growth, their channel mix. Only estimation tools can help, and you accept modelling error as the price of information you otherwise couldn't have. Similarweb remains the strongest option here.

**Your own.** How much AI traffic you get, which crawlers read your pages, whether your presence rate moved, whether AI referrals converted. Measure it. Estimation tools will be wrong at your scale, particularly for smaller sites, and exact data is cheaper than the estimates.

The mistake worth naming: reporting your own AI referral traffic from an estimation tool. That traffic is already difficult to attribute, since much of it arrives without a usable referrer, and layering modelling on top produces numbers that can't support a decision. We covered the underlying attribution problem in [AI dark traffic](/blog/ai-dark-traffic-attribution).

## FAQ

**What is the best Similarweb alternative for competitor traffic?**
Semrush and Ahrefs are the main alternatives, using different methodologies that produce different numbers.

**Can any tool measure competitor AI traffic accurately?**
No. It isn't observable from outside. Estimates and modelled category data are the only options.

**Which alternatives track AI crawlers on my own site?**
Kitbase, Profound, Hall and Scrunch AI. Kitbase verifies crawler identity against published ranges.

**Is Similarweb accurate?**
It's modelled. Directionally useful for large sites and popular categories, less reliable for small or niche properties.

**Should I use estimates for my own traffic?**
No, when you can measure it. Use estimates only for questions about sites you don't control.
