**Writesonic and Frase are both content platforms that added AI visibility tracking, and they approach content from opposite ends.** Writesonic generates. Frase researches and briefs. Both track your presence in AI answers as a secondary capability.

Disclosure: we build Kitbase, a dedicated AI visibility tool, mentioned once at the end.

## The short version

Pick **Writesonic** if you need volume and don't have writers.

Pick **Frase** if you have writers who keep producing pages that miss the mark, and the gap is knowing what a page must cover.

## Content approach

Writesonic generates content across formats, with GEO positioning attached. The pitch is speed: from gap to published page without a writer in the loop.

Frase started as a content research and brief tool, using SERP analysis to determine what a page should cover, and it's still strongest there. The output is a brief a human writes from, not a finished article.

The distinction matters for AI citation specifically. Engines are getting better at discounting content produced at volume for the purpose of being cited, and a bad citation degrades their product directly, so that filtering will keep tightening. A well-briefed page written by someone who knows the subject survives that better than a generated one.

**Frase wins on quality ceiling.** Writesonic wins on throughput.

## AI visibility tracking

Writesonic monitors ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, which is five surfaces including Claude.

Frase tracks around eight platforms.

Both are competent baselines and neither is a dedicated platform. Expect a presence figure and a trend rather than separated mention-versus-citation rates, cited-page mapping with source classification, or per-mention framing.

**Frase wins on coverage.** Neither wins on depth.

## What they're really competing on

Not tracking. Both modules exist so the tool can claim to close a loop, and both are secondary to the content work.

The useful question is which content problem you have.

**No capacity.** You know what to write and nobody can write it. Writesonic addresses that, with the quality caveat above.

**No direction.** You have writers producing content that doesn't get cited. Frase addresses that, by making explicit what a page needs to cover to be considered authoritative.

**Neither.** You have writers and direction, and you're still not cited. That's the interesting case, and neither tool diagnoses it.

## Side by side

| | Writesonic | Frase |
|---|---|---|
| Content generation | Yes, core | Limited |
| Research-led briefs | Basic | Yes, core |
| Optimisation scoring | Basic | Yes |
| AI engines tracked | 5, incl. Claude | ~8 |
| Citation-level detail | Basic | Basic |
| AI crawler tracking | No | No |
| Price band | Mid-market | Mid-market |

## The third case

If you have writers and clear briefs and your citations still aren't moving, the problem is almost certainly not content, and buying either tool won't help.

Two explanations dominate.

**The engines aren't fetching your pages.** AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript, so nothing in your analytics or in either of these tools tells you whether GPTBot or Google-Extended read what you published. A page nothing has crawled cannot be cited, however well briefed. This is the most commonly missed cause and the cheapest to check.

**Your category is answered from third-party sources.** In many markets the engines cite review sites, forums and editorial coverage rather than vendor pages. If that's true for you, publishing more of your own content moves nothing, and the effective work is getting cited on those sites, which is outreach rather than writing. We covered the pattern in [which domains AI engines cite](/blog/which-domains-do-ai-engines-cite).

Both are worth ruling out before committing to a content programme. Neither Writesonic nor Frase surfaces them, because both are content tools and their tracking exists to report on content.

Kitbase does the reverse: no content generation, verified crawler data, ten answer surfaces and cited-source classification. Covered in [Kitbase vs Writesonic](/blog/kitbase-vs-writesonic) and [Kitbase vs Frase](/blog/kitbase-vs-frase).

## FAQ

**Which is better for AI visibility tracking?**
Frase covers more platforms. Neither matches a dedicated GEO tool on citation-level detail.

**Should I use AI to write pages aimed at AI citation?**
Cautiously. Engines are improving at discounting content produced at volume for that purpose. Judge samples on whether they'd stand up without the AI framing.

**Do either track AI crawlers?**
No. Neither reports whether AI crawlers fetched your published pages.

**Which is better for a team with writers?**
Frase, because the briefs improve what your writers produce rather than replacing them.

**How do I know whether content is my problem at all?**
Check whether AI crawlers fetch your pages, and whether the engines cite vendor pages in your category or third-party sources.
