# What is AI Overview?

Google's AI-generated summary shown above traditional search results, synthesizing an answer from multiple sources.

An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google shows at the top of search results for many queries, synthesizing an answer from several sources before the traditional ranked list of links even appears. AI Mode extends the same idea into a full conversational search experience.

AI Overviews pull from Google's standard search index — there's no separate optimization track or special submission process to appear in one. In practice, this means the clearest path to showing up is the same one that gets a page ranked well in classic search: crawlable, well-structured, fact-rich content that Google already trusts enough to index and rank.

For brands, an AI Overview mention behaves differently from a normal search result: it can answer the user's question completely without a click, so a brand can be named prominently in an Overview while seeing zero corresponding traffic in web analytics — which is exactly why AI Overview and AI Mode appearances need to be tracked as their own signal, separate from clicks and rankings.

## Example

Searching "best project management tool for remote teams" surfaces an AI Overview naming three products before any link appears. One of the three gets zero referral traffic from that search, because the user's question was already answered — but its brand awareness and downstream direct-traffic lift are very real, just invisible to a traditional analytics-only view.
