# What is AI Answer Non-Determinism?

The tendency of AI engines to return different answers to the same question when asked more than once.

AI answer non-determinism is the tendency of generative AI engines to return different brands, different citations, or an entirely different answer when the exact same prompt is asked more than once — even seconds apart. It's one of the sharpest differences between AI visibility and classic search rank tracking, where the same keyword typically returns roughly the same results run after run.

The practical consequence is that a single check of a single prompt isn't a reliable measurement. Asking "what's the best X?" once and seeing your brand missing doesn't mean you're invisible to that engine — it might mean you were absent from that one sample. The only way to get a trustworthy signal is to sample: run the same prompt repeatedly over time and read the rate at which you appear, not any individual answer.

Non-determinism is also why AI visibility tracking reports trends rather than a single score. A presence rate built from many runs smooths out the noise of any one answer and reveals real movement — a content change, a new competitor, an update at the AI provider — that a one-time check would completely miss.

## Example

Asking an AI engine "top analytics platforms" twice in the same minute returns four brands the first time and a different set of five the second time, with only two names overlapping. Neither answer is wrong — they're both valid samples from a probabilistic system, which is exactly why presence rate is measured across dozens of runs rather than trusted from any single one.
