What Plausible and Fathom do well?
Both tools earned their reputations. They’re worth choosing on their merits, not settled for.

Both share the qualities that make privacy analytics worth switching to in the first place with no cookies, no personal data hoarding, GDPR-friendly by construction, and a script light enough that it doesn’t slow your site. If those are your requirements and pageview-level insight is your ceiling, you can stop reading and pick either. We mean that.
Where the ceiling is?
The design decision that makes Plausible and Fathom fast and private aggregate, anonymous measurement is also the decision that caps them. A few things fall outside that model by design:
- No individual user identity. Neither tool builds a per-user profile you can look up. You can see that 40 people signed up; you can’t open “this specific user” and replay what they did across visits, because there’s no durable identity to hang it on. That’s a deliberate privacy stance, and it’s the right one for a pageview tool but it rules out product-analytics questions like retention cohorts and per-account behavior.
- No frustration signals. Rage clicks, dead clicks, and the small UX failures that quietly kill conversion aren’t part of either product.
