Checking an MCP server before you rely on it
“MCP included” covers a wide range. Four questions worth asking.
What does it expose? One dataset or several. The value multiplies when an assistant can join visibility, crawler and traffic data without you exporting anything.
Is history available? A server that answers about current state but not the series is fine for a status check and useless for analysis.
What are the limits? Rate limits and query complexity caps determine whether an assistant can do real work or just look things up.
Is it hosted or self-run? Hosted is less setup; self-run gives you control over credentials and network access. Both are reasonable, and it’s worth knowing which you’re getting.
