Ahrefs is an SEO suite with an AI visibility module. Kitbase is an AI-era analytics tool with some SEO-adjacent features. These are not substitutes, and any comparison that treats them as such is misleading. The real question is whether you need both.

We build Kitbase, and we’d tell most teams to keep Ahrefs.

What Ahrefs does that we don’t

A backlink index of its own. Ahrefs crawls the web at enormous scale and maintains one of the two largest link indexes in the industry. Kitbase licenses its backlink data from DataForSEO rather than crawling for it, and adds links detected from your real traffic, reclamation opportunities and a competitor gap list built from the domains AI cites. Good enough to run outreach from, smaller and less current than a crawl Ahrefs owns end to end.

Keyword research at depth. Search volumes, difficulty scores, SERP history and keyword clusters across most markets, on Ahrefs’ own data. Kitbase has keyword research with difficulty and search intent across 94 markets, licensed from DataForSEO, which is real data on a shorter leash: coverage and freshness are someone else’s to change.

Site Explorer. Competitive analysis on any domain: their top pages, their traffic estimates, their link growth. Kitbase measures your own property and competitor presence in AI answers, and nothing about competitors’ traffic.

Brand Radar. Ahrefs’ own AI visibility module, covering Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity, with search-demand data and Reddit, YouTube and TikTok mention tracking. It’s a good baseline that sits next to your link and keyword data.

What Kitbase does that Ahrefs doesn’t

AI crawler detection. The clearest gap. Ahrefs crawls the web with AhrefsBot, which is a completely different thing from telling you whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot fetched your pages. Those crawlers don’t run JavaScript, so no tag-based tool sees them either. Kitbase reads requests forwarded from your server or edge, resolves each to a named crawler and vendor, verifies the claim against that crawler’s published identity, and reports per-path crawl frequency. That last part is how you notice a section stop being read weeks before citations reflect it.

Deeper AI answer metrics. Presence rate splits brand mentions from actual domain citations. Share of voice is normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank over time. Cited sources go to the exact page, classified as yours, a competitor’s or third-party and tagged by source type. Each mention carries sentiment, recommendation status and list position. Coverage reaches ten surfaces including Claude, DeepSeek, GLM and Kimi, which Brand Radar doesn’t cover.

Web analytics. Cookieless, with autocapture, custom events, funnels, journeys, retention, page durations and rage-click detection, on a server-side anonymous ID with no consent banner needed for anonymous tracking. Ahrefs has Web Analytics; Kitbase’s is a fuller product-analytics surface.

The honest recommendation

Don’t replace Ahrefs with Kitbase. You’d lose the link index, keyword research, rank tracking and Site Explorer, and gain the crawler layer and deeper answer metrics. For almost any team that’s a bad trade.

The question is whether to add. Two triggers:

You can’t tell whether AI engines read your pages. No SEO suite reports this. If your AI visibility is moving and you’re guessing at causes, that’s the missing input.

You need Claude or the wider engine set. Brand Radar covers six surfaces and not Claude. If your buyers are technical, that’s a gap.

If neither applies, turn on Brand Radar and spend the difference on content or links. Our post on AEO vs GEO vs SEO covers how the disciplines overlap without replacing each other.

FAQ

Can Kitbase replace Ahrefs? No. It has no rank tracking, and its backlink and keyword data is licensed from DataForSEO rather than crawled in-house, so it’s smaller and less current than Ahrefs’ own.

Does Ahrefs track AI crawlers like GPTBot? No. AhrefsBot crawls the web for Ahrefs’ own index; that’s unrelated to reporting which AI crawlers fetched your pages.

Does Ahrefs track AI visibility? Yes, through Brand Radar, covering Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity, as a paid add-on.

Which covers more AI engines? Kitbase on Business, at ten surfaces including Claude, DeepSeek, GLM and Kimi. Ahrefs covers six including Copilot, which Kitbase doesn’t.

Do backlinks affect AI citations? They correlate with which pages get retrieved, so they matter indirectly. Retrieval and freshness matter too, which is why crawl data complements link data.
