Kitbase vs Matomo: Full GA Replacement vs AI-Era Analytics

Kitbase vs Matomo compared on self-hosting, GDPR tooling, feature depth, and the AI crawler and visibility layer neither analytics suite traditionally covers.

Matomo is the most complete privacy-first replacement for Google Analytics, and it’s the heaviest tool in that category to run and to learn. Kitbase is lighter, covers most of what teams actually use, and adds the AI crawler and answer-engine layers Matomo doesn’t have.

We build Kitbase. If you need a near one-to-one GA replacement with compliance documentation, Matomo is the better answer.

What Matomo does that we don’t

Feature-for-feature GA coverage. Custom reports, segments, goals, ecommerce tracking, multi-attribution models, custom dimensions at depth. If your team has built reporting habits around GA4, Matomo maps onto them more closely than anything else.

Self-hosting with full data ownership. Run it on your own infrastructure, keep every row, satisfy data residency requirements outright rather than by contract. Kitbase can be self-hosted too, and Matomo’s self-hosted deployment is the more established path with a longer track record.

Compliance tooling. Built-in GDPR features: data subject requests, anonymisation settings, consent management integration, and documentation designed for a DPO to read. In regulated industries that paperwork is the product.

Heatmaps and session recording as add-ons. Kitbase doesn’t record sessions at all.

A large plugin ecosystem and a long history, which matters for hiring and agency familiarity.

What Kitbase does that Matomo doesn’t

AI crawler detection. Matomo is a JavaScript tag by default. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot don’t execute JavaScript, so they never appear. Matomo can process server logs, which gets closer, but it isn’t built around AI crawler attribution or verification. Kitbase reads requests forwarded from your server or edge, resolves each to a named crawler and vendor, verifies the claim against that crawler’s published identity, and reports per-path crawl frequency.

AI visibility. Up to ten answer surfaces, with presence rate splitting brand mentions from domain citations, share of voice normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank, cited pages classified as yours, a competitor’s or third-party and tagged by source type, and per-mention sentiment, recommendation status and list position. This isn’t an analytics feature at all, which is why no analytics tool has it.

A lighter path from install to insight. One script tag or an npm SDK, autocapture, funnels, journeys, retention, page durations and rage-click detection, on a server-side anonymous ID with no consent banner needed for anonymous tracking. Matomo’s power comes with configuration.

An MCP server on every plan, so an AI assistant can query your analytics, crawler and visibility data directly.

Which to choose

Choose Matomo if you need a near one-to-one GA replacement, you’re in a regulated industry where compliance documentation is scrutinised, or data residency requires self-hosting with full control. Its depth is real and nothing else in the privacy-first category matches it.

Choose Kitbase if you want privacy-first analytics without an implementation project, and you need the AI-era layers: which crawlers read your site, whether the engines cite you, and whether AI referrals convert.

The two aren’t mutually exclusive, and some teams run Matomo for compliance-grade analytics with Kitbase for the AI channel. That’s more tooling than most need, but it’s coherent when the compliance requirement is genuine.

For the wider field, our Google Analytics alternatives guide covers Plausible, Fathom, Umami and PostHog alongside both.

FAQ

Is Matomo harder to run than Kitbase? Self-hosted Matomo requires infrastructure, updates and tuning at scale. Matomo Cloud removes that. Kitbase is lighter in both configuration and concepts.

Does Matomo track AI crawlers? Not by default. Its JavaScript tag can’t see them, and while it can process server logs, it isn’t built for AI crawler attribution or identity verification.

Which is better for GDPR? Matomo has more compliance tooling and documentation. Kitbase is cookieless by default, so anonymous tracking needs no banner. Different routes to the same goal.

Does Kitbase do session recording? No. It surfaces rage and dead clicks as direct signals instead, which answers some of the same questions without recording sessions.

Can I self-host Kitbase? Yes. See the self-hosting documentation for the deployment path.
