Kitbase vs Semrush: Marketing Suite vs AI-Era Measurement
Kitbase vs Semrush compared on SEO tooling, AI visibility, crawler detection and web analytics, with an honest read on which you should keep.
Semrush is a marketing suite covering SEO, ads, content and social, with an AI visibility toolkit attached. Kitbase measures the AI answer layer, the crawlers behind it, and what the resulting traffic does. They overlap on one module out of a dozen.
We build Kitbase, and we’d keep Semrush if we were you.
What Semrush does that we don’t
The list is long, so here’s the substance rather than the catalogue.
Keyword and competitive research at scale. Search volumes, difficulty, SERP features, competitor keyword gaps across most markets. Kitbase has keyword research; it’s not comparable.
A large backlink index. Kitbase detects backlinks from your real traffic and builds a competitor gap list from AI citation data. That’s outreach material, licensed rather than crawled in-house.
Advertising research. Competitor ad copy, spend estimates, PPC keyword data. Kitbase does none of this.
Rank tracking, content templates, social tools, local SEO. All absent from Kitbase.
The AI Toolkit. Tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI surfaces, producing a visibility score with competitor benchmarking and brand-perception signals, priced as an add-on per domain. It’s a reasonable baseline connected to everything else you already do in Semrush.
What Kitbase does that Semrush doesn’t
Server-side AI crawler detection. The structural gap. Semrush’s site audit crawls your site with its own bot; that tells you nothing about whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended or PerplexityBot fetched your pages. They don’t run JavaScript, so no tag sees them either. Kitbase reads requests forwarded from your server or edge, resolves each to a named crawler and vendor, verifies the claim against published identity so spoofed user agents don’t count, and reports per-path crawl frequency.
Citation-level AI metrics. Presence rate splits brand mentions from actual domain citations. Cited sources go to the exact page, classified as yours, a competitor’s or third-party and tagged by source type from user-generated content through to editorial. Each mention carries sentiment, whether you were recommended or merely named, and list position. Share of voice is normalised across every tracked brand with a dense rank. A blended visibility score averages all of that away.
More engines. Up to ten surfaces on Business, including Claude, DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi and Google AI Mode.
Product analytics. Cookieless web analytics with autocapture, custom events, funnels, journeys, retention, page durations and rage-click detection, on a server-side anonymous ID. Semrush has traffic estimates and analytics integrations; it isn’t a product-analytics platform.

Which to keep
Keep Semrush. Almost nothing in Kitbase replaces it, and cancelling a suite to buy an AI visibility tool leaves you unable to do your existing SEO work.
Add Kitbase when one of these is true:
You can’t explain AI visibility changes. The score moved, the module shows no cause, and the missing input is whether AI crawlers are still reading the relevant pages.
The blended score hides the problem. Being mentioned without being cited is a different problem from being absent, and it needs different work.
You have several domains. Per-domain add-on pricing across five properties stops being the cheap option.
You need Claude or the wider engine set. The AI Toolkit doesn’t cover it.
If none apply, the AI Toolkit is doing the job and the money is better spent on content or links.
FAQ
Can Kitbase replace Semrush? No. No rank tracking, no ad research, and backlink and keyword data licensed from DataForSEO rather than crawled in-house.
Does Semrush track AI crawlers? No. Its site audit uses its own crawler, which is a different thing from reporting which AI crawlers fetched your pages.
Which tracks more AI engines? Kitbase on Business, reaching ten surfaces. Semrush covers four to five.
How much is the Semrush AI Toolkit? An add-on to your Semrush subscription, typically per domain. Published figures vary; confirm with Semrush.
Do I need both? Only if you have questions the AI Toolkit can’t answer, most commonly about crawler activity or citation-level detail.
