What none of them see

Every tool above is a JavaScript tag, and AI crawlers don’t execute JavaScript. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot fetch your pages without firing any tag, so they appear in no report from any privacy analytics tool.

For a content site, which is exactly Plausible’s core audience, that’s the most consequential blind spot in the stack. AI answers are grounded in pages the engines retrieved, so whether your articles get crawled now determines whether they can be cited, and citations increasingly determine whether anyone finds you at all.

Kitbase provides cookieless web analytics of comparable shape, autocapture, custom events, funnels, journeys, retention, page durations, realtime and rage and dead click detection, on a server-side anonymous ID with no consent banner needed for anonymous tracking, plus two server-side layers.

For content sites specifically

Plausible’s audience is heavily blogs, documentation sites and content-led marketing sites. Three things are worth knowing if that’s you.

Your traffic mix is changing. A growing share of research happens inside AI assistants and never reaches your site, so falling sessions can coincide with rising influence. Presence in AI answers is the measure that catches this, and no analytics tool reports it.

Referrals from AI arrive badly labelled. Some carry a usable referrer, many don’t, and copied links carry none. That inflates direct traffic and understates the channel in every analytics tool equally. We covered it in AI dark traffic and attribution.

Crawl frequency predicts citation better than pageviews. If AI crawlers stopped fetching a section, its citations will fall regardless of how it performs with human readers, and you’ll see the crawl change weeks earlier.

None of that argues against Plausible for what it does. It argues that the picture it gives is a smaller share of the whole than it used to be.
