What is Competitor Gap Analysis?
Competitor gap analysis identifies domains that link to at least one of your tracked competitors but don't link to you — surfaced from a link graph and ranked by how many competitors a domain links to, typically with that domain's own authority as a tiebreaker. It answers a more actionable question than raw backlink counts: not just who links to competitors, but specifically who's willing to link to a company like yours and simply hasn't yet.
A domain that links to three of your four tracked competitors but not you is a strong outreach candidate — it's already demonstrated it links to companies in your category, which is a much warmer prospect than a cold pitch to a domain with no history of linking to anyone in the space.
Because the underlying link graph is refreshed periodically rather than continuously, a gap analysis reflects competitors as they were configured at the last refresh — a competitor added afterward only appears in the comparison starting from the next refresh. Filtering the gap list down to a single competitor turns it into a focused list of exactly that rival's link sources, useful when going after one competitor's backlink profile specifically rather than the whole field.
Example
Gap analysis shows a niche industry directory links to three out of four tracked competitors but not to the brand running the report. Since the directory has already shown a pattern of listing companies in this exact category, it becomes the first outreach target on the list — a far better bet than a generic directory with no connection to competitors at all.
