What is Consent Management?
Consent management refers to the tools and processes used to obtain, record, and enforce user consent for data collection, cookies, and tracking. A consent management platform (CMP) typically presents a banner or modal where users can accept or reject different categories of tracking.
Under GDPR and similar regulations, consent must be freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous. Users must be able to withdraw consent as easily as they gave it, and their choices must be respected across your entire tech stack.
Effective consent management integrates with your analytics, advertising, and marketing tools — conditionally loading tracking scripts based on the user's consent choices. This ensures compliance while maximizing the data you can collect from users who do opt in.
Example
Your consent banner offers three categories: Essential (always on), Analytics (optional), and Marketing (optional). When a user accepts only Analytics, your system loads the analytics SDK but blocks marketing pixels and ad trackers.
