What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so search and AI systems can lift it directly into an answer — a featured snippet, a voice reply, or a sentence in an AI-generated response. Where SEO's unit of success is position, AEO's is being the answer.
AEO predates the current wave of generative AI — it grew out of optimizing for Google's featured snippets and voice assistants. The playbook is the same either way: a clear, direct answer near the top of the page, backed by solid structure (headings, lists, tables) and verifiable facts, so a machine can lift it cleanly.
In practice, AEO and GEO have converged. Every modern AI engine both quotes pages directly (the AEO move) and synthesizes its own answer from multiple sources (the GEO move) in the same response — so optimizing for one now means optimizing for both.
Example
A pricing FAQ page answers "How much does Kitbase cost?" in one direct sentence right under the heading, instead of burying the number in a paragraph. Google lifts that sentence into a featured snippet, and the same clear structure makes it easy for ChatGPT to quote when someone asks the same question.
