AI Visibility & GEO

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of increasing how often your brand is mentioned or cited in answers generated by AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Claude. The unit of success is being named or cited in the response, not ranked on a results page.

GEO differs from classic SEO in a few important ways: the same prompt can produce a different answer every time it's asked, there's no keyword-volume data to plan against, users often never click through to a source, and third-party pages — review sites, Reddit threads, comparison articles — frequently shape the answer more than a brand's own homepage does.

Because a single query isn't a reliable signal, measuring GEO means sampling: running the same prompts repeatedly across engines and tracking the presence rate — the share of answers that mention or cite you — over time, plus how that compares to competitors.

Example

A team asks "best session replay tool for startups" against ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude once a day for a month. Their brand appears in 40% of answers in week one and 58% by week four, after they published a comparison page that AI engines started citing directly.
