AI Visibility & GEO

What is Presence Rate?

Presence rate is the core metric of AI visibility tracking: the percentage of AI-engine answers, across a set of tracked prompts, that mention your brand by name or alias, or cite your primary domain as a source. It's the GEO equivalent of a keyword ranking — except instead of one stable position, you're measuring a rate across many samples.

Because AI answers are non-deterministic — the same prompt can return a different set of brands each time it's asked — a single check tells you almost nothing. Presence rate is only meaningful as a trend built from repeated runs over time: a 20% presence rate today that climbs to 35% next month is a real signal; either number on its own is just a sample.

Good presence-rate tracking breaks the number down further: by engine (are you strong on Perplexity but invisible on Gemini?), and by whether the answer mentioned you, cited your domain, or both — two related but distinct signals worth watching separately.

Example

A brand tracks 25 prompts across four AI engines and finds a combined presence rate of 32%. Filtering by engine shows they're present in 55% of Perplexity answers (which cites sources heavily) but only 12% of Gemini answers — pointing them toward the specific engine to investigate.
