What is AI Brand Mention?
An AI brand mention is any instance where an AI engine's answer names your brand or product — whether or not it also links to your website. This distinction matters because it's something classic SEO tools simply can't see: a rank tracker only knows about clicks and links, but an AI engine can recommend a brand by name in prose with no citation attached at all.
Detecting mentions reliably takes more than a keyword search of the raw answer text, because engines use aliases, abbreviations, and informal names. Extraction typically runs a separate model pass over each answer to pull out every company or product it names, along with signals like sentiment (positive, neutral, negative), whether the answer recommends the brand versus merely referencing it, and its position when the answer presents a ranked list.
Mentions and citations are tracked as two related but separate rates — mentioned (named in the text) and cited (linked as a source) — because an engine can do either independently, and the gap between the two numbers is itself informative.
Example
An AI engine answers "best tools for tracking AI crawler traffic" by recommending a brand by name in the second sentence, but the citation list at the bottom links to a different comparison article instead. That's a mention without a citation — good exposure, but a signal that the comparison article, not the brand's own site, is the trusted source right now.
