What is AI Visibility Prompt?

An AI visibility prompt is a question — phrased the way a real buyer would type or speak it, like "best session replay tool for startups" or "Kitbase vs PostHog" — that's tracked on a recurring basis to sample how AI engines answer about a product category. Prompts are the input side of AI visibility tracking; presence rate and citations are what come out the other end.

Unlike SEO keywords, prompts have no search-volume data behind them — there's no tool that reports how often a given question gets asked to ChatGPT. Building a good prompt list is closer to customer research than keyword research: it means anticipating the comparisons ("X vs Y"), the category questions ("best tool for..."), and the alternative-seeking questions ("alternatives to X") that buyers actually ask.

Because AI answers are non-deterministic, a single prompt needs to be run repeatedly — daily is typical — to produce a trend rather than a one-off snapshot. A prompt list is also a living asset: reviewing which prompts a brand shows up strongest and weakest on points directly at what content to write next.

Example

A team seeds their prompt list with 15 questions drawn from their own sales call transcripts — the actual comparisons prospects mention — instead of guessing at generic category terms. Running those prompts daily surfaces one recurring alternative-seeking prompt where a specific competitor dominates every answer, prioritizing exactly which comparison page to write next.
